Meditation Changes Everything
September 2008
By Julia Watson

I spent the later half of my twenties searching for meaning.  I looked for it through activism: getting involved in anti GMO campaigns, marching against the WTO in Seattle in ‘99, and working in a local eco-forestry project.  I found some meaning, and certainly learned a lot, but it was never enough.  I felt like I was missing some essential piece of information about what life is all about.  My search continued and led me to take several personal growth workshops, and read spiritual books insatiably.  I had all kinds of realizations in the process but was still left perplexed as to what my life’s purpose was, and how to go about leading a meaningful life.  I came to realize that what I really needed was to meditate and calm my chattering mind in order for those answers to reveal themselves.

I was delighted therefore to meet Scott Robinson, the Spiritual Director of Lightwork Spiritual Development, in 2001 and soon after began to take classes through his meditation centre in Vancouver.  I found myself utterly fascinated by the information being presented.  Someone was finally able to answer all the metaphysical questions I had always been curious about.  I finished the 7 week level 1 class series and signed up for the next level right away.  And so it continued and now I am enrolled in the seventh and final level - a 3 year Spiritual Apprenticeship Training.

In the seven years that I have been taking meditation classes at Lightwork Spiritual Development, my life has changed immeasurably.  My perception of the world changed as I began to let go of victim mentality and took more responsibility for my life.  Though I had always been a cheery person it was very often an act, not wanting anyone to see the mess of insecurities inside.  As my meditation practice deepened I found that I was feeling cheery both inside and out a lot more of the time.  My inner critic subsided vastly and perceived mistakes were met with humour more often than tears.  As I learned to be gentle with myself I was able to be gentle with others.

When a group at Lightwork formed to start up an intentional spiritual community and ecovillage on Gambier Island, I was one of the first in the door.  With the cost of real estate in Vancouver we knew that it was unlikely we’d ever be able to own property individually.  But collectively we could pool our resources, establish a community, and practice living our ideals.  We wanted to live sustainably, treading as lightly as possible on the land.  We also wanted to live with others committed to the Lightwork path.  A spiritual path that facilitates healing and freedom through meditation.  Now, four years and innumerable work parties later, we are more committed to the project than ever.   Check out the Lightwork Ecovillage website for more info or to get involved.

I now teach Lightwork meditation classes regularly in my Kitsilano apartment as well as offer private energy sessions to help clarify personal life dynamics.  My life’s purpose has become clear: to get conscious, to wake up, to drop the baggage, and be free.  I’m living it and it feels great!  I always thought it would be something more tangible like “save the whales” but now I see that my ego was looking for something grand.  By keeping it simple and focusing on one meditation at a time I am able to move with more ease through my life.

Committing to doing my healing and choosing a spiritual practice have been the two decisions in my life that have ‘changed everything’.  As each person is drawn to remember their true nature – that they are a spiritual being having a human experience – the world as we know it begins to change.  It is my belief and experience that the simple act of taking a meditation class can change everything.
